Interpretation of Stephen Dabrowski’s paintings
Bricks: a constant in all the paintings. Each brick symbolizes a person or event in our lives which shapes us into who we are or have become.
Walls: form from the bricks for good and bad.
They protect oneself but also confine us in our beliefs and views of the world.
Towers and Buildings: also made up of bricks we build them for comfort, and to look over to view what is beyond ourselves and to see who is coming close.
Bridges, ladders, tunnels, stairways: connect our inner self. Some go to dark places,others lift us to higher ground.Both are important , as shadows can hide us and light shows who and where we are.
Stone faces: are the people, for good or bad, who have made a permanent mark on us. They are the ones who have helped in making or tearing down our walls.
Rope and Chain: are what binds us,catches us,and restrains us.
Clocks: are another constant fixture. They symbolize the interweaving of time and space. It is what threads everything together from a single thought or moment to the building and decay of our walls. Time also abstracts what is new to some and old to others.
Miscellaneous symbols: such as a wheel or machine parts are all tools in building who we are and create the left-over discarded pieces.
